You are born with Type I...Type II has a later onset and is caused by a number of factors including obesity, although not all people with diabetes are obese. But if you JUST found out, you likely have Type II.Yes, Type 1s can be overweight. In fact, I knew a Type 1 who was significantly overweight when diagnosed. Her doctor just assumed that she was Type 2 because she was fat. Well, she lost almost all her excess weight and became diet controlled for about a year. (She was probably honeymooning.) After that year, though, her condition deteriorated and she was put on insulin because oral medications didn't work. She moved and started seeing a new doctor who took one look at her insulin regimen and realized that she was using much less insulin than a Type 2 with insulin resistance would. The new doctor looked over her old lab work and saw that she had tested positive for GAD antibodies and was, in fact, a Type 1. Her previous doctor either neglected to look at her labs or made a mistake and wouldn't say so. Either way, obesity is not exclusively for Type 2s and not all Type 2s are obese.
