What is the best food for diabetes?
---------------------------------------------------
As a Type I diabetic, I, too, have been faced with this question. While I won't pretend to have perfected my diet, I would be happy to share with you things that have helped me. First thing to remember is that more important than the sugar content of an item is the CARBOHYDRATE content, and that's total carbs, not net carbs, etc.
For meals, I have seen the best blood sugar results when eating salads, a variety of protein sources (poultry, beef, fish), an frozen dinners which provide the exact amount of carbs in the package to help in determining insulin intake and/or exercise. Another thing my endocrinologist has recommended is to eat about the same number of carbs for each meal to help your body adjust on it's own.
I don't know about you, but I'm one that needs to snack mid-meal, but this can be hard being diabetic. I've found the best snacks are cheese, yogurt, peanuts, low-carb granola bars, and sugar-free popsicles. Again, this can vary based on your own tastes, but look for items that have low total carbs or adjust the amount you intake of higher-carb items.
One last thing, be sure to speak with your endocrinologist or primary care physician for suggestions that can be catered to your tastes and lifestyle. They can even refer you to a nutritionist who can provide a specific meal plan to help you regulate your sugars. Whichever route you take, I wish you the best of luck!
