The few times I have gone HYPO I needed the quick fix to prevent going into insulin shock coma. Yes, I am type 2 but that makes the insulins even more dangerous as I do take insulins as well as oral meds.
The rule of 15s is the one to follow. 15 grams quick glucose of some form then 15 minutes follow this up with either more quick fix glucose or FOOD in the form of protein, fats and a few carbs.
Personally I detest the taste of the glucose tabs!! Ick! I keep some very small candy canes in my purse for quick energy! They come in at about 15 grams of carb each. Half a regular coke is the same or half cup or 4 ounces of orange juice.
The thing to remember is to always follow with slow down foods. I could vacuum the average fridge after one of the Hypos, so do be careful to take very careful balance of foods then quit or you go rollercoastering all over the place.
Fast acting carb source works best for most of us followed with FOOD!
Chocolate candy bars are slower acting, so I suspect your friend prefers the action of Hershey Fix!
