Do you have to have diabetes and other diseases to be a candidate for gastric bypass surgery/?
---------------------------------------------------
No, you do not have to have any health conditions other than morbid obesity. The determination is based on your BMI (Body Mass Index). In most cases, if you have a BMI of 40 or greater, are between the ages of 18 and 65, and have tried numerous other diets without success you are considered a good candidate.
However, if you have a BMI of 35-40 you could be considered a candidate for surgery if you have other medical conditions such as diabetes, GERD, Sleep Apnea, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Heart Disease etc.
If you have insurance, call your provider to find out what their specific requirements are.
