I am take Levemir at night-time with Novorapid and metformin at mealtimes. I understood that Novo-nordisk recommends this particular combination for basal/bolus regimes (fast acting at every meal plus long acting at might). I like this regime and it fits with my lifestyle because it gives me greater freedom with timing of meals and choice of food. It also means that I can react quicker to high blood sugars as I am injecting at every mealtime rather than once or twice a day.

Weight is an issue but I think all insulins have a tendency to increase weight, some more than others. The choice offered to me by the Diabetes Specialist was Lantus or Levemir. After discussion, one of the reasons why we chose Levemir was because weight gain was less. I wasn't offered Insulatard so I don't know the advantages/disadvantages.

If you are not happy with the change in your medication I suggest you go back and discuss it with your healthcare professional. They will have a better understanding of the differences between one medication and another and be able to guide your choice.
